Leadership is a human activity and it demands a human touch. Those who feel valued by a leader walk with an extra spring in their step and take their work just that little bit more seriously. An important way in which leaders do this is by getting out to talk face-to-face and pitching in with the group’s activities. The importance of doing this is illustrated by Chris Masters’ earlier observation and by the frequency with which former national servicemen nominate ‘looking after the diggers’ as an important habit they learned during their military service.
